Serve Nashville: ESL

Serve Nashville: ESL

The fall semester of ESL classes at Thrift Smart will begin Tuesday, August 30 at 6:30 and will run for 12 weeks.

There are several volunteer opportunities.

First, if you cannot commit to every Tuesday, that is fine. Whatever you can commit to – once a month, every other week, or every week – we ask that you be consistent with that commitment.

Community Groups. What if each group, instead of gathering in homes, committed to one Tuesday a month?

Cannot do Tuesdays? We got you covered. ESL classes are also taught on Mondays, 6:30 at Glenwood Baptist Church, 308 E Thompson Lane

Volunteer Positions:

Assistant ESL teachers. Each class has a lead teacher. These teachers need someone to assist them by having one-on-one English conversation with students that reinforces what is being taught as well as helping anyone that may be struggling with the evening’s lesson.

US Citizenship Test Preparation. This is exactly what you think it is – helping students prepare for the US Citizenship test. Teaching materials are made available to you.

Childcare. This may not seem like much, but may be one of the most important roles in that it frees up parents to concentrate on learning English.

Homework Help for Elementary and Teenage Learners. Many children that have been relocated in the US are very intelligent, but struggle in school. This is a great opportunity to make a tremendous impact in the life of a child.

Bus Attendants. The need is for a person to ride shotgun on the bus to assist the driver and passengers.

Other Support Needs:

Physical set-up, tear down and cleaning (must be able to arrive at 5:45).

Hospitality.

Registration/Assessment. Assessments are as simple as asking a few questions like: “What is your name?” “Where do you live?” and “Tell me about your family?” The assessors job is to determine the student’s English level by his or her ability to answer.

If you can commit to serving these 12 weeks, whether it be every week, every other week, or even once a month, email Michael Carpenter – michael@diningwithsinners.org.

Please include your contact info and the position you are volunteering for so that I can pass it along.
