The ARTIST & the CANVAS: part 2

Week two of the artist and the canvas takes us on a journey to the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 5.

Matthew 5:1 “When He saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain, and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2 Then He began to teach them, saying….”

Jesus here is speaking to a very diverse crowd; Gentiles and Jews, uneducated and educated Pharisees.  He’s talking to this massive cross section of society, and He speaks to who we are as the church by saying, “You are the salt of the earth.  You are the light of the world.”

He communicates that becoming the salt of the earth leads to then being the light of the world.

You are the salt of the earth…You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lamp stand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5:13-16

Which takes us to our question of the day, “What is happening to make us salty?”

Paul gives insight in Romans 6:22:

But now, since you have been liberated from sin and have become enslaved to God, you have your fruit, which results in sanctification —and the end is eternal life!

Two great writers give additional emphasis to by stating:

“Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.”
– Dietrich Bonhoeffer
“Until you have given up your self to Him you will not have a real self”
– C.S. Lewis

To become salty is to allow The Holy Spirit to grab a hold of our heart and begin to chisel and shape and mold us more and more over a period of time, into the image of Christ so that we become the type of people that preserve against moral decay, add flavor to life, cause other people to be spiritually thirsty.

And that transformation of the Holy Spirit working in us and us submitting to it then enables us to become light to the world.

Now, why is this a big deal?

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men. – Matthew 5:13

Without transformation, salt is bland and unappealing if not unbearable and dangerous.

So ask yourself, Where do I need to be obedient? Where’s the Lord leading me right now?

The Church is the expression of God’s Kingdom…Be the Church…Live the Story…Run Forward!!
